Tornado Lobster Killer Wants Their Money Back — And So Do You — "Pay To Play" Is the Punk Song the Scene Has Owed Itself for Years

By 2026, pay-to-play booking is not a controversial topic in the DIY punk underground, it is simply the water. Everyone agrees it's extractive, everyone knows it's accelerating, and the majority keep complying because the alternative is not playing shows. What the scene has been missing is someone to write the actual song. Milan based hardcore outfit Tornado Lobster Killer have written it.
"Pay To Play" is the opening single from their forthcoming album Lobsteria, and it hits with the energy of a grievance that's been carefully held for years and finally cut loose all at once. Vocalist and guitarist Marco "Croma" Cordopatre delivers with the barely-contained momentum of someone who's had this exact conversation at too many loading docks at too many venues that wanted something for nothing.
The track he and co-writer Matteo Salaroli built underneath that delivery is melodic hardcore with genuine punk velocity, punishing without sacrificing the hooks, is exactly the right vehicle for this kind of accumulated heat.
The song carries weight beyond the personal. It was written in part as a tribute to the late Marco Garripoli, a critic and advocate who spent years documenting the exploitative dynamics built into underground live music culture. Garripoli's perspective sharpens what could have been a standard-issue complaint into something closer to a structural argument. This is not a song about one bad deal. It is a song about a system.
Every production choice reinforces the point. Croma self-produced, Cristian Masiero handled recording duties, bass was tracked at HP Music Studio in Ringwood, UK, Masiero mixed and mastered at his own studio, and Croma designed the artwork. For a song about the costs of operating outside the industry's infrastructure, the decision to build everything within the band's own extended community isn't just practical, it's the thesis made tangible.
Formed in Milan in 2018, Tornado Lobster Killer now features Croma, Salaroli, Nanà "Octopus" Dalla Porta, Masiero on drums, and Roberto Moro on lead guitar. They've built their following the hard way — show by show, without machinery behind them — and Lobsteria shapes up to be the record that earns them the wider audience that work has warranted. "Pay To Play" is a hell of an opening argument.
